This report originates from Naavadih, a village located in the Silli block of Ranchi district. Within the context of caste discrimination, one can often witness instances of unequal treatment towards individuals belonging to the upper-caste strata. The privileged members of the upper-caste community are frequently found occupying higher positions in society, while those from other castes are often relegated to menial tasks, facing a lower priority. Consequently, the upper-caste individuals enjoy better access to economic, social, and political opportunities, while Dalits and other marginalized groups encounter numerous challenges in their pursuit of equality.

It is worth noting that the upper-caste individuals practicing caste discrimination in this particular village do not belong to the Savarna caste, but rather hail from the Kurmi, Mahato, Nai, or Hajjam castes, which themselves fall under the category of other backward classes. What is even more striking is that the so-called “lower castes” are not permitted to reside within the village itself but are rather situated outside its boundaries. This exclusionary practice is a clear manifestation of social discrimination.

Furthermore, discrimination is openly practiced against the Lohra community within the village. The villagers themselves assert that the deeply ingrained tradition of untouchability has been perpetuated for generations, resulting in the systemic marginalization and exclusion of the Lohra community. These discriminatory practices create a profound sense of social division and hinder the progress towards achieving an egalitarian society.

The situation calls for urgent attention and measures to address the prevailing caste-based discrimination in Naavadih and similar regions. Efforts should be directed towards fostering inclusivity, promoting dialogue, and raising awareness to eradicate the deep-rooted prejudices that perpetuate such injustices. Only by embracing diversity, dismantling discriminatory practices, and promoting equality can we hope to create a more equitable and harmonious society for all its members.
